A few years ago, a friend from high school (Zak) posted on facebook that he was doing a week long summer camp called Experience Camps. Being the curious (read nosey) person that I am, I did some research on it and it spoke to me.
It spoke to me for a few reasons.
First, if you have spent more than 5 minutes with me, you know that I am the ultimate camp kid. I went to sleepaway camp (shout out Camp Highlander) for over 10 years. I was both a camper and a counselor. I lived 10 months for 2, color war was my life...every cliche you ever heard about kids being obsessed with sleepaway camp, I fit. My best friends to this day, I made at camp when I was a pre-teen.
Second, Zak and I have been part of the awful horrible club that no one should ever join, the dead dads club. As many of you know, I joined this horrible club at the age of 20. It took me 4 years (and a broken elbow) to even begin to heal and understand how my life had changed. Now, after plenty of therapy and time, I have learned how to be more open and understanding both to myself and others.
This opportunity to go to experience camps allows me to help the younger generation and keep living the camp life.
Through all of these experiences, I am forever grateful to have such a loving family and support system, which brings me to my goal with this fundraiser. ExperienceCamps is a completely free experience for campers and staff attending. The costs behind the scenes are a lot (as we all know) and demand over the last few years especially with COVID has increased by 500%.
Experience Camps is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit, non-governmental organization, created to ensure no child has to grieve alone.
Will you please support this fundraiser that is so near and dear to my heart?
