When I was ten years old, I watched my aunt deliver her last child. She had the option of a hospital or birthing center. She chose a birthing center. I watched her long excruciating labor and delivery. The baby came out purple. I saw the nurses rushing around and eventually the baby was transported to a NICU about 30 min drive. After seeing all of this it made such an impression on me. A few thoughts came to mind, I prayed my baby cousin was ok, is there really that much pain that my aunt was literally climbing the toilet? I also thought it was incredible how all of that happened.
Most women in Haiti do not get the choice of having their babes in the hospital or even in the birthing center. Midwives For Haiti aids in educating Haitian nurses in becoming a skilled birth attendant this is a 12 month training for the women. Midwives For Haiti is important to ALL of Haiti. It is also important to my friend Brenda Bartkowiak CNM (midwife) and myself (RN-Labor and Delivery). We are going hoping that we can bring needed supplies, aid in educating the women and maybe learning Creole.
