Imagine being asked to stay at home when your home is one of the most dangerous places you know. Survivors of domestic violence are trapped at home with their abusers.
1 in 3 Latinas are survivors of domestic violence. With the rise in self-isolation, rise in financial hardships, and a decline in resources available for Latinx survivors of domestic violence, more survivors are in need of support and community navigation. Since the “stay-at-home” order was given, we have seen an unprecedented rise in unemployment, wage loss, financial hardship, inability to meet basic needs, a five time increase in alcohol sales, and a 300% rise in gun sales. For those living with domestic violence, the combination of these variables is life-threatening. The presence of a gun in an abusive home increases the risk of homicide by 500%.
In order to address this need, Latina SafeHouse is implementing a bilingual domestic violence hotline- Tú Comunidad (Your Community) and is expanding direct services for survivors including rental assistance, utility assistance, and transportation assistance.
As a direct result of the coronavirus pandemic, LSH is working quickly to implement these additional services for survivors of domestic violence, but we cannot do it alone. With the cancellation of fundraising events and an increase in the need for direct services, we are in need of financial support. Your donation today is an investment in direct survivor services during these times, an investment in the quality of life of survivors, and an investment in strengthening our community.
Thank you for your support! Muchas gracias por su apoyo.
