Consistent with the mandated closure of schools across the Caribbean, The University of the West Indies (UWI), suspended classes as part of an aggressive restriction of large gatherings, which is the most effective means of containing the spread of COVID-19. With the suspension of classes, all our resident students, were asked to return home. The University directed that classes be delivered online effective April 14, 2020. This action created particular hardship for a numer of students resident in Jamaica. They do not have the requisite devices to access classes and resources online.
The system requirements for students for on-line/distance learning are basic internet, computer, and webcam. However, approximately 2,000 of our students will not have access to computers to attend the on-line classes and to take their examinations. It is in this light that we seek your support towards the aquisition of laptops, tablets or other smart devices that will enable these students to complete their education.
We are seeking to support a minimum of 200 students with devices estimated at US$250 each. The Library will manage the distribution of the devices, which we envision will benefit other students in the future.
The University of the West Indies Alumni Association New York, Florida and Washington DC Chapters and the American Foundation for the University of the West Indies understand that during this pandemic we are all facing challenging times; by helping these needy students you maybe helping the next scientist who will find the cure for future viruses.
We pray that you and your family continue to keep safe and well. Your support is appreciated.
