The Lake Fork Valley Conservancy (LFVC) needs your help to raise $15,000 to complete the purchase of approximately two acres of land on the north side of Lake City, Colorado. Two years ago, LFVC acquired the property and restored this part of the Lake Fork River. We installed rock structures to control stream flow and improve habitat, and the project turned an unsightly braided gravel bar into an attractive and useful area with public access for fishing, picnicking and other recreational activities.
In 2017, LFVC negotiated a 3-year owner-financed interest-free loan for $165,000, with final payment due at the end of 2019. To date, we have paid back $150,000, using funds from the Upper Gunnison River Water Conservancy District, the Gates Family Foundation, and local donors. Now we urgently need your assistance to pay off the remaining $15,000. Grants for small real estate purchases such as this are difficult to find, and we have already secured as much funding as possible from these sources. Consequently, the remaining loan balance is the responsibility of LFVC, and we urgently need your assistance to complete the acquisition.
LFVC has invested over $750,000 in river rehabilitation and land acquisition along the Lake Fork River and Henson Creek in Lake City. This work was funded by numerous grants and with donations from individuals like you. Outcomes include stabilized river channels, reduced bank erosion, excellent fisheries habitat, and safer river access. Construction of terraces at the confluence of Henson Creek and the Lake Fork created additional space at Memorial Park, which is now an appealing and popular river front recreation area. This work also supported local contractors, laborers and businesses.
The images here convey the essence of the Lake Fork River Enhancement Project more clearly and directly than anything we could say. As you look at them, remember... your generous support guarantees this area remains public and protected for the long term, and improves the quality of life for both our human and wildlife communities. Help make Lake City a better and more beautiful place for all of us.
