This Women’s History Month, as we strive for a more equal world, we are working on closing a gap in our community. At first glance, this gap might not seem life altering but can it have huge implications. Girls' participation in sports is vital, not just for keeping girls healthy, but critical to keeping them on a path to great futures. Girls who play sports in high school were 41% more likely to graduate from college, less likely to use substances, and gain life-long healthy habits.
A study done found that 94% of c-suite executives were former athletes. Skills and habits learned while participating in sports have a lasting and profound effect on the individual. Sadly, only 27% of high school girls in East Providence are participating, a stark comparison to 61% nationally. We believe this puts girls at a disadvantage.
With more than half of our members qualifying for free or reduced lunch, it is incumbent on our organization to ensure that there is access for girls playing sports. The Ladies First program was launched in effort to increase access and participation rates for girls. The program exposes girls to a variety of new sports to help them find their sports passion, introduces them to female sports role models, and has a dedicated scholarship fund to significantly reduce or waive fees for female athletes.
Let’s level the playing field. Will you be a sponsor of the Ladies First program? Your gift will expand girls’ participation and more importantly, expand their futures!
