A COMMUNITY CORNERSTONE
In 1993 Dr. Louisa Silva, a Salem family practice physician and her dear friend Delight Stone developed a plan for opening La Clínica de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. Their mission was to provide quality medical care at the least possible price for the low income and uninsured Spanish speaking migrant farm workers in Salem, Oregon and its surrounding areas. At its inception, each office visit was $20 dollars including lab work.Twenty-seven years later, La Clínica de Guadalupe is still operating in a similar manner and with the same mission. We are still charging a low-cost flat fee. Most of our patients see the clinic as their primary care source while others use it for urgent care. In 2019, the clinic had over 4,000 patient visits at an average cost of less than $100 per patient for practitioner visits, lab tests and dispensed medicines.
The Guadalupe Clinic accomplishes this thanks to generous partnerships with Quest Labs, Salúd Tuality, Medical Teams International Dental Van, the support of local specialized physicians and community volunteers.
In light of the current COVID-19 pandemic we have temporarily switched our in-person visits to telemedicine. We have dropped the cost of our visits by 15 dollars and are steadily losing revenue as the scope of the services we provide has narrowed. With the loss of revenue, we estimate it will take around $4,000 monthly to maintain the building and keep the office operating behind our closed doors. We have a medical assistant working daily in the clinic answering phones, scheduling telemedicine appointments and supporting our practitioners. We are doing our best to adapt to a new way of providing service. We must protect our vulnerable staff so we will be slow at opening the doors to everyone.
Since transitioning to telemedicine appointments in late March, our staff of medical professionals have managed many of our patients’ health problems and fears. They have successfully kept concerned patients from presenting to urgent care and the hospital emergency departments. Guadalupe Clinic is the only option for many of our patients and the consequences of not being seen in a timely manner may lead to undue complications. In addition, our practitioners counsel each patient on how to responsibly follow the CDC's guidelines.
La Clinia de Guadalupe’s patients are the people who work and live in the Willamette Valley that cannot apply for or afford health insurance. Your support today is necessary for the Clinic to continue providing healthcare services to a historically underserved community. Please give what you can.
With heartfelt thanks,
The staff, volunteers and medical providers at La Clinica de Guadalupe
