Days before Christmas 2018, I was diagnosed with malignant melanoma metastases in the brain. Obviously, I was completely devastated. This is my third time fighting melanoma cancer, and my second time fighting metastatic melanoma cancer.
I *hate* cancer.
This whole journey started when I was first diagnosed in September 2012, and I've been fighting melanoma in a multitude of ways over the last six years. It is my sincere prayer and hope that NO ONE would ever have to experience the terror of melanoma. Melanoma has been a terrorist in my life and brings terror not only to the person diagnosed but the family, friends, and loved ones of the one diagnosed.
My last two forms of treatment have been through clinical trials made available to me at Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center. These clinical trials were made possible through advancements in melanoma research, and I agreed to participate knowing that my involvement can lead to more advancements for others who are fighting melanoma now and in the fture.
Patients with metastatic melanoma, let alone brain metastases (like me!), often have very grim survival rates. Someone dies from melanoma every hour.
However, in the last five years, advancements in cancer research have dramatically changed the landscape for a possible cure! This is because of willing donors and voices coming together to find a cure.
I found the Melanoma Research Alliance recently and have been incredibly encouraged with the way they are impacting melanoma research. 100% of MRA funds go to clinical trials and resarch associated in finding a cure! That's amazing! Therefore, I wanted my friends and family that give to not only be a part of finding a cure, but also putting dollars behind actual advancements in cancer research that can directly impact the treatments available to me *and* help keep me alive for as long as possible!
Will you join me, in as many days as God will let me have on this earth, to help make deaths caused by metastatic melanoma a thing of the past? Let's put our resources together and fight for more birthdays of those we love!
