In 2017, Kerry Brodie founded Emma’s Torch, a nonprofit culinary training program for refugees. During a three-month paid kitchen apprenticeship at the organization’s two Brooklyn eateries, students learn the skills needed to work in a professional kitchen, receive English classes, and upon graduation, are helped to secure jobs in prestigious restaurants around New York City. So far, nearly 50 participants have graduated, most of whom have found fulltime employment.
