Monsoon rains and devastating flooding have forced an estimated 600,000 people into 3,000 emergency camps in the Kerala region of India this week. While news continues to come in on the many thousand people that have lost their lives an increasing number of families have been displaced without food, shelter or safe water.
Access to safe water is one of the most critical emergency relief services and the LifeStraw team is already on the ground in India working with the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Government of India, to bring provide LifeStraw Community water purifiers. The first 150 purifiers are being airlifted to Kerela now. We are also working with the regional office of the World Health Organization, the Government offices of Maharashtra and Kerala to understand the needs on the ground, prioritize areas with greatest need and expand our reach with LifeStraw Community.
LifeStraw Community water purifiers can quickly be deployed to provide victims of the flooding with access to safe water. Each purifier serves 75-100 people.
