Iowa Genealogical Society and Library
628 E. Grand Ave
Des Moines, IA 50309-1924
In 1965 Iowa Genealogical Society started with a small group of individuals with similar interests, along with an orange crate full of books that was kept in a member’s basement. The IGS library collection has grown significantly over the past decades with more than 25,000 items of books, microfilm, maps, obituaries, family histories and publications.
The IGS library moved to our current location in the Des Moines’ East Village neighborhood in 2005 to serve members as well as guests. With our membership dues we work to pay the mortgage and other necessary expenses with very little extra for anything else. We have been helping people trace their Iowa family roots since 1965. We have worn out, run down, and used up items that our members and guests need to do their research and to be safe and comfortable.
We find we have a need for up-to-date equipment such as reader/printers, improved scanners, updated computers and software. We also have a need for brick and mortar issues such as new carpeting, fixing walls, eaves and gutters, air-conditioning in the West Wing portion of our building, and the list goes on.
We ask for your help to keep IGS updated and a great resource for those who continue to look for their roots, learn about DNA, attend special classes, join a special interest group, or learn more about a database system for their research. Our library has many publications that are no longer in print or have been donated from families who have researched their roots. We want to preserve these books and publications for others seeking their family stories.
Iowa Genealogical Society is a non-profit, 501(c) (3) organization and we receive no funding from Federal, State, County or City Governments. Your donation of any dollar amount can have a significant impact in helping us. Not only does your donation help to preserve our collection, but it allows the collection to be available for future generations. This will give future generations an appreciation of their family heritage and a better understanding of our Iowa history.
Thank you in advance for your contribution to this cause, which means so much to all of us at the Iowa Genealogical Society & Library.
