Five years. Imagine waiting five years for a place to live that you can finally afford and feel safe. That's exactly what Macky, Yvette, and their three children, Winner, Gael, and Eliab, have been waiting for.
Since their move from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, this family of five has lived in a two-bedroom apartment where Macky and Yvette have had to constantly worry about the safety of their children. Macky recounts one night, “I was working the night shift and my wife and my daughter were sleeping, and someone started shooting around the apartment complex and a bullet went through our living room into the bedroom.” Luckily no one was hurt. But desperate to make a change, the family learned about Greater Matthews Habitat for Humanity and were accepted into our program. Thanks to our faith partners and supporters, we were able to break ground and begin construction on Macky & Yvette's home back in February. Unfortunately, with the temporary closure of our ReStore due to COVID-19, drastically reducing our income, we've had to halt construction. Meanwhile, Macky, Yvette, and their children continue to wait.
With the current economic situation, many of our current funders are unable to continue to financially support this home. We are working with our vendors to get the best price possible on our HVAC, electrical, and other necessary work, but also have increased construction costs because we cannot safely have our volunteers building with us until after the COVID-19 quarantine has lifted.
Completion of this home will not be possible unless we raise another $50,000.
That might seem like a daunting number, but with the help of our community we make that happen. Your generosity now will help us to complete construction on their home, and ensure that this family's wait is finally over.
