We need your help! Without your contribution, the Hemingway Birthplace will have to close its doors due to the financial impact of the COVID pandemic.
Each year the Ernest Hemingway Birthplace in Oak Park, Illinois is visited by thousands of visitors from around the country and across the world. This restored historic home is where visitors can learn more about Ernest Hemingway, one of America’s most important writers, while experiencing family life at the turn of the 20th century. The birthplace is also immersed in the present, hosting lectures, arts programs, book discussions and student programs that encourage aspiring writers. The annual “Hemingway Shorts,” a short story competition, the Writer-in-Residence program, performances and student scholarships make the home a thriving center for artists and writers.
Now, the very survival of the Hemingway Birthplace is threatened by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Unlike many larger museums, the foundation that operates the birthplace home does not have a significant endowment or reserve fund. Almost all of the modest monthly costs for the operations of the Hemingway Birthplace are generated through annual tour admissions, supplemented by the contributions of donors and members, as well as the efforts of our volunteer tour guides.
Because of the state-mandated closure for most of the spring and summer of 2020, admission revenues have dropped precipitously. Federal, State and other grants have helped, but all these obtainable grant options have been exhausted. Now, there is simply not enough funding for us to continue operation. The doors will close this winter, and we will not be able to reopen them in the spring.
We need your help! Please help us by contributing - and keeping the doors of the Hemingway Birthplace open.
