The Crescent Theater is Mobile's independent theater in the heart of downtown. For more than 10 years, the theater has delighted patrons with independent and foreign films and documentaries, many of which would not have been available to local audiences in any other venue. The Crescent has proven to be an important cultural asset for the city. With only one screen, however, ticket and concession sales do not cover all expenses. As is the case with nearly all independent theaters across the country, especially those with only one screen, non-profit support is essential. The role of the Crescent Theater Film Society (CTFS) is to cover the rent, $36,000 per year.
The shut-downs imposed by the threat of COVID-19 have closed the theater since March, greatly hampering fundraising efforts. Since the CTFS is entirely made up of volunteers, we have not been eligible for the initial federal or state relief programs. With the Crescent open once again, we are appealing to donors to help us keep the screen from going dark permanently. Without donations at this time, the theater will have to close in October or November.
We know the current health and economic conditions make charitable giving difficult, however if you are able, a gift to the CTFS will keep the Crescent open so it continues to serve as a place where outstanding films are shown and outstanding people come to see them!
