My grandpa, Ernie Gare Sr, was an intelligent, hard-working and kind man who valued academics, athletics and integrity.
In addition to being a committed and active member of the community in his hometown of Nelson, BC, he raised 6 kids with his wife Cathy, and established a very prominent hockey presence across BC. Ernie Gare Sr started the first university athletic scholarships, which has now become the longest running scholarship in Canada and still actively funds athletes pursuing academics today.
My grandpa has been a source of hope and inspiration for me since I can remember, and I was proud to be the first grandchild to graduate from the University of Calgary, the same school he completed his Masters at many years before.
Sadly, my grandpa Ernie passed away from ALS at the young age of 52. My mom and I are running to create awareness of ALS, generate fundraising dollars for the important work of the ALS Society of BC, and to live in the light of my grandpa's legacy.
