Hi, I'm Katie.
I'm running in my first Boston Marathon through the fundraising option for Kids Connect, a Natick non-profit organization. I feel so lucky to be able to participate in support of my local community of Natick.
FUNDRAISING EVENT, Yoga & Meditation, 4/13 in Natick, MA.
Have a raffle item to donate? Please reach out to me: email@example.com
Last year Desiree Linden was the first American woman to win the Boston Marathon in 33 years. She didn't just win, she slowed to run with a teammate. She was made stronger by her connection to others. She didn't sprint ahead disregarding others, she slowed to help. You've often heard that "nice guys finish last," making it even more moving to see that when kind women stick together, and help each other, they can win! Seeing her cross the finish line and then hearing her story was so inspiring!
I do not have a remarkable story. I have not survived a terrible disease that I'm asking you to donate to in hopes that we'll eradicate it. I'm just a mom who feels our kids need more hope, more love, and more peace. They need support. We hear about skyrocketing rates of depression among teens. I don't want this for my children. I want to see more kids who feel empowered.
Knowledge is power and should not only belong to the already powerful. It should be shared. It is this belief that has me asking you to support a small tutoring organization in Natick, MA: http://www.kids-connect.org.
“Kids Connect is a non-profit tutoring program serving the youth of Natick. We provide educational services in math, including geometry and algebra, language arts, chemistry, physics and Spanish. Workshops in related topics and small groups in middle school subjects are also offered. Kids Connect provides tutoring on a sliding scale basis and is open year-round to students in grades K through 12.”
Some of the most important words to me in the description above are "sliding scale." There are families who have faced unexpected challenges and they need help. We live in a time of polarized uncertainty. Our children need to learn how to learn, and to cultivate critical thinking so that they can form their own educated opinions. I believe that no child should be denied educational success due to their lack of ability to pay. Kids Connect makes help available to all the children in the community, not just those who have parents who can afford it.
For a child struggling in school, mastering a difficult subject can seem impossible. Just ask me about calculus. I surely didn’t need to be able to solve vectors to function as an adult, right? I was told it wasn’t about learning to the the math, it was about learning how to learn. I want that for today’s teens. I want them to learn how to push through difficult subject matters in school so they can learn to push through difficulties in life.
Providing children with a better education should be something we all believe in. I hope you'll support my run and help me raise funds for our kids. Together, let’s give the youth of one suburban town a brighter future --- they deserve it. Who knows which of them holds the power to make a big difference one day?
