For my Senior project, I am training for and competing in an Olympic distance triathlon. My friend, Sonya, and I will be racing in the event at Goddard Park on June 17th. The Olympic triathlon is a 1 mile swim, a 25 mile bike ride, and a 10K run. I'm looking forward to competing in the event, but I think it is also important that I compete with a cause in mind. I will be donating all of the money I raise to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in memory of my Aunt, Sandie Kearney. Just a little over 1 year ago, my aunt was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), which is a cancer of the blood and bone marrow. Unfortunately, our family didn't end up with the outcome we had hoped for when she was first diagnosed. After undergoing months of chemotherapy at Rhode Island Hospital, she lost her fight on February 13, 2018. It is estimated that in 2018, there will be about 60,300 new cases of leukemia and 24,370 deaths from leukemia (American Cancer Society). I'm hoping that the money I raise will benefit Leukemia patients like my aunt and take us one step closer to having a cancer-free world. All donations are appreciated!
