Ainsley's Angels is proud to parther with Kathryn and make this dream a reality!
Over the past 2 years, I have experienced the long decline from “multisport athlete” [read: ultramarathon runner, distance cyclist, swimmer, climber, and yoga enthusiast] to “fulltime wheelchair user”.
This occurred due to a rare neurological complication of Sjogren’s Syndrome, known as Dorsal Root Ganglionopathy. Three failed attempts at rehabilitation later, I was told my disability is likely permanent.
As you might imagine, this has been a very difficult transition for everyone involved. I spent a long time stuck on the idea that I needed to “get back to where I was”, as though moving forward didn’t count if I did so from a seated position. Many months down this road, I understand that going back isn’t possible, and I’m beginning to realize that my potential isn’t less now, but different.
I began looking into adaptive sports, and immediately realized two things:
1. There are a lot of options, and most of them require expensive equipment.
2. For me, the most versatile option is a handcycle.
Owning a handcycle will give me back the freedom to bike with my kids, and train for events, among many other benefits to my mental and physical health. I anxiously anticipate the start of my journey into adaptive sports, but this next step of acquiring the equipment I need isn’t one I can accomplish on my own. Any support you can give towards meeting my fundraising goal will truly mean the world to me.
