On April 16, 2018 my sister and I will be running in the 122nd Boston Marathon!
We are so excited to run together and share this experience. We attempted one marathon together back in 2016 but unfortunately my sister was unable to finish due to the crazy humidity and heat that day forcing the marathon to be shut down before she could cross the finish line. Despite that setback, she has committed to running another marathon and we are pumped to have received a bib for Boston this year. Back in 2014 I was able to finish my first marathon in Boston so to share this similar finish line is truly special.
After chatting about charities to fundraise for, my sister and I decided to choose a cause that we both felt deeply connected to and it was clear recovery and addiction was the first thing that came to our mind. Kathryn and I both grew up on the Cape and so it made sense to pick a non-profit based on Cape Cod, MA. We came across a wonderful non-profit called Wellstrong whose mission is to create safe, supportive communities of people in recovery from substance use disorder through fitness, wellness and meditation. My sister and I are both in recovery and as women who have been active their whole life we understand the amazing benefits fitness and wellness can have on your physical, mental and spiritual well being. For those that are newly sober a supportive community focused around bettering & challenging yourself can be monumental in rebuilding the parts of you that you lost in addiction. We love that Amy Doherty is building a community focused in recovery and wellness and strongly believe in the services the gym offers to aid in the recovery process. If you know of a loved one or family member whose battled addiction or has been lost to addiction, services like this can be life changing. Support WellStrong's mission today by giving back to help this new gym flourish and provide life changing services to those in recovery. Find out more about their services and mission here: http://www.wellstrong.org/about/.
**Kathryn and I have set a goal to raise $1,200 which would translate into 10 new members getting free membership for an entire year. Any additonal fundraising will go towards the gym's operations and to help with the facility**
Consider donating $10 for one month of membership to $120 for a year for one person :)
Here is a description on their membership taken from their website. They opened their doors in December 2017:
"Since our studio opening only two weeks ago, we have had 44 members enroll and over 65 people attend classes. The support and engagement of the recovery community has far exceeded our most hopeful expectations.
There is no cost for a person in recovery to become a WellStrong member. As we know, substance use disorder knows no boundaries in its reach; but this disease, tragically, creates multiple hurdles in recovery. One of them being financial hardship.
So, as the new year approaches, we are asking for help. Please consider Sharing the Health by sponsoring a WellStrong membership. The cost is $10 per month, per member. You can donate by arranging automatic monthly debit/credit card payments, or making an up-front donation for the total number of memberships, for the number of months you choose. Please note: Any donations made to WellStrong are tax-deductible to the extent provided by law. Donations made before December 31st may be tax deductible for 2017. We wish you wellness in 2018. May you stay inspired."
