Hello and thank you for visiting my fundraising page! Running has been a significant part of my life for the better part of the last 10 years and on May 3rd I will be toeing the start line of my next marathon in Rhode Island. Though this will be my fourth time running a marathon it will be different in one major way: I will be running in memory of my Nana.
Two days before Thanksgiving my family and I were given the devastating news that my sweet Nana had stage 4 pancreatic cancer. After a very brief, but bravely fought battle she passed away on December 28th.
Growing up, my Nana had a license plate holder on her car that read: Grandmothers Have Something Special. And she sure was special. I was so lucky to have had the opportunity to have such a close relationship with her. She was there for every moment in my life: the big, the small and the seemingly insignificant, that I now realize were big moments in their own way- like catching an episode of the Golden Girls together after school while sharing a package of Necco wafers.
In honor of my Nana, I have launched a fundraiser for the Brave Like Gabe Foundation. Gabriele Grunewald, the founder of Brave Like Gabe, was a professional runner and an advocate for rare cancers. Through her own struggle with rare cancer she inspired countless people with her bravery and encouraged others to share their own Brave stories. Throughout her treatments Gabe continued to run and believed that physical activity was in it’s own right, a medicine. Gabe passed away in June of 2019, but her legacy continues as her foundation continues to educate and raises awareness and funds for rare cancer research in the hope that families facing a rare cancer diagnosis will have better and more effective treatment options.
No donation is too small and will greatly help families and patients who are standing up to rare cancer and showing them what it means to be #bravelikegabe
Thank you for your support as I take on this challenge in memory of my Nana and continue #runningonhope
