Help Support Karen's Efforts to Run a Half-Marathon to Raise Awareness for Pancreatic Diseases on May 3rd, 2020!
Help Karen Frankenfeld (NPF SD Chapter Chair) celebrate a major milestone to celebrate the successful removal of her pancreas and transplant of her islet cells on May 3rd, 2019.
An active person full of passion and buoyant enthusiasm, Karen's pancreas began to "turn on her" at a young age, misfiring powerful destructive enzymes that began to tear down significant internal tissue. Faced with a full pancreas shut down by her early twenties, ultimately, she was unable to enjoy her passions for many years as her body surrendered to chronic pancreatitis and exocrine and endocrine organ failure.
"I was unable to exercise or participate in many of the activities I enjoyed. I wanted to complete a 13-mile half-marathon on the one-year anniversary of my TPIAT surgery. I have felt motivated to inspire hope to myself and all others that have been affected by the disorders and dysfunctions of the pancreas. I am also using this as a milestone to celebrate my first year as a Type 1 Diabetic resulting from my surgery. I am so fortunate and grateful to be able to run and enjoy life again."
Spearfish Canyon, where Karen will be completing a 13.1-mile solo half marathon in lieu of a cancelled group race she was anticipating completing on May 3rd.
In tandem with celebrating a major milestone, Karen is hoping that this pursuit may be used to provide a "socially distant" fundraising opportunity for her local community. By supporting my race, all proceeds will go to the advancement of the National Pancreas Foundation (NPF) and the development of a South Dakota Chapter:
$1 x mile= $13
$2 x mile= $26
$4 x mile =$52
Let's help Karen reach her fundraising goal of $1,000!
Thanks for your help to inspire hope and awareness for victims of pancreatic diseases.
