Jumpstart, a nonprofit organization working toward the day every child in America enters kindergarten prepared to succeed, partners with local preschools in underserved communities across Southern California to provide language, literacy, and social-emotional programming for over 2,200 preschool children, every year. Jumpstart trains over 600 caring college students, known as Corps Members, to deliver their enriching educational activities in the classroom over the course of the school year. Through Jumpstart programming, children fall in love with reading and are equipped with the skills to enter kindergarten prepared to succeed.
With school closures in place and summer right around the corner, children in underserved communities will miss fundamental educational opportunities, perpetuating the learning gap. In the days and months ahead, Jumpstart's work will be even more critical, which is why the Southern California Young Professionals Board is stepping up to support Jumpstart's innovative approach to continue delivering programming to local children and families. They are creating new activities, videos, and resources to share with families, caregivers, educators, and the online community. Supporting Jumpstart will enable resources like these to be developed and distributed to our preschool children and communities at large. Supporting Jumpstart now also means they can continue to find innovative ways to serve our children during this outbreak and prepare for their return to the classroom.
