As many of you know in less than 30 days I will be running the NYC Marathon for the first time.
This morning I woke up knowing I had to do a long(ish) run and I really didn’t want to. I wanted to skip it or push it off until tomorrow. After contemplating ways I could justify not doing it, I decided to get up and do it. Even though it was only 12 miles, which no longer scares me, I struggled at mile 1 and 2. This is a feeling I’ve become familiar with throughout my training, but what gets me through the runs where I just want to quit is realizing my “battle” of running is far easier than any battle others are going through. I think about how lucky I am to have my health, family, friends and the many opportunities I’ve been fortunate to have in my life. For this reason, I want to run with a purpose and for a cause that can help fight some of those battles that are far greater than mine will be on marathon day. I’m sure I will struggle through some miles, but while I do I hope to smile knowing my run has made a difference in some way. Although my entry into the marathon didn’t require me to fundraise, my miles of training have given me a lot of time to reflect on how this marathon extends so much further than 26.2 miles that day. With less than a month to go, I have an overwhelming sense that there is more I can give than just my Saturday mornings and tired muscles, so on November 4th, I will no longer be running for just myself, and have decided to raise money for the Robin Hood NYC Foundation.
I wanted to pick a foundation that would make a difference in the city I am lucky enough to call home and complete my first (and last) marathon in. The Robin Hood Foundation is a charitable organization which attempts to alleviate problems caused by poverty in NYC. I chose this foundation because 100% of every dollar donated goes to support struggling New Yorkers. (https://www.robinhood.org/)
Any amount you are able to give, or just your words of encouragement to anyone you know who is fighting a battle every day, means so much! I will be matching donations up to $1,000, and BlackRock will be matching my donation as well. Thank you in advance for your support!!
