Friends and Family,
On April 16, I will be running the 2018 Boston Marathon on behalf of Journey Forward and in honor of my best friend, Denna Laing.
On December 31, 2015, a day that we could only dream of as kids growing up in Boston, Denna’s life changed forever. We were playing in the first ever Women’s Outdoor Classic at Gillette Stadium as part of the inaugural season of the National Women’s Hockey League. It was truly a dream come true to play the game that we loved with our best friends in our home city. But in the first period, tragedy struck when Denna went into the boards and suffered a severe spinal cord injury.
This is where Journey Forward came in. Journey Forward is a non-profit organization dedicated to bettering the lives of those with spinal cord injuries. Through a unique and active full body approach, Journey Forward teaches these individuals how to perform daily functions and helps to reintroduce the sense of independence that is taken so quickly from those with SCIs. But more than that, the Journey Forward family provides each individual with an unparalleled support system and unwavering determination in a long road to recovery.
I have seen first-hand how Journey Forward has given Denna the independence that she so dearly missed in the months following her accident. I have seen how Journey Forward has supported her during the most difficult time of her life, but most importantly, I have seen how Journey Forward has become yet another team, of which she is a valued member.
I can’t imagine what Denna’s life would be like without Journey Forward and those teammates that she relies on each and every day. It is my hope that someday every individual who is faced with an injury like Denna’s has the opportunity to be part of the Journey Forward team and to be uplifted and believed in by so many caring individuals.
Growing up in Boston, I always dreamed of running the Boston Marathon. But it was not until Denna started going to Journey Forward that I realized that I will never come across a cause that could mean so much to someone I love so dearly. It is an honor to be able to give back just a small portion of what Journey Forward has given to Denna by supporting the mission and providing this opportunity to other individuals.
Please know that each and every donation, no matter the size, supports people like Denna in recovering from life-altering injuries.
Thank you for your support in this journey.
JOURNEY FORWARD INC wrote: A spinal cord injury is one of the most devastating events that can happen to a person; taking not only their ability to walk, but also their independence and ability to accomplish some of life's most fundamental tasks. Imagine in an instant losing the ability to feed yourself, or not being able to get dressed on your own, or even simply not being able to itch your nose. The effects of this injury are indeed catastrophic, not only to the person injured but to the families and loved ones in their lives as well. Also, this injury does not discriminate and can tragically take anyone of any age, race, or gender. In an instance lives and futures are shattered and thrown upside down in ways that one cannot begin to imagine. Once the initial shock of this injury wears off, the reality begins to set in. The lifetime cost of this injury easily reaches millions of dollars and additionally predisposes one too many other problems and illness. Journey Forward is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to bettering the lives of those who have suffered a Spinal Cord Injury through an intense exercise program. Exercise is important to everyone and even more so to those who have suffered a Spinal Cord Injury. An average able bodied person can walk around throughout the day; and that simple task of walking puts needed stress on the body to insure proper bone density, muscle growth, and many other bodily functions. When an individual suffers a spinal cord injury and are required to sit in a wheelchair all day, they are no longer able to obtain the benefits that come from the average activities of daily living. Journey Forward is an exercise based program designed to assist those with Spinal Cord Injuries so they too can achieve some of these most basic lifelong functions and benefits.
