What's the Problem?
On May 25th, 2020, Minneapolis Police officers arrested a man named George Floyd after he was accused of purchasing a pack of cigarettes with a counterfeit $20 bill. Within seventeen minutes, despite no struggle, except for the one to breathe, George Floyd laid on the ground unconscious and unresponsive. Bystanders filmed this brutal murder while pleading to the police officers on the scene, however, neither the police officer with his knee on George Floyd's neck nor any of the other police officers involved, paused to assess the situation or attempt to revive George Floyd.
The 8 minute and 46-second murder of George Floyd shocked the country and the world, but citizens around the country were unfortunately not surprised as this was just another incident in a long list of clear and abhorrent police killings. On March 13th, Police Officers in Louisville bashed down the door to the apartment of Breonna Taylor, a 26-year old emergency room technician, while executing a no-knock search warrant in an attempt to apprehend two men who were believed to be selling drugs out of a house far away. A brief confrontation ensued, and within a few minutes, Breonna Taylor was shot multiple times by police officers, while in her own home.
In both instances, the victims were African American. The list goes on and on...
