Today our world feels ever more divided and volatile. Amid the chaos, where can we find a greater sense of harmony?
José Limón once said, “As artists we offer humanity a light to defend itself against darkness and ignorance and decadence.” Dance has the power to transcend factions and turmoil. We can’t help but empathize with moving bodies: when we observe other humans in motion, our brains activate as though we were performing that movement ourselves. The Limón technique embraces the human condition, connecting natural movements of the body with a full expression of the human spirit. José Limón’s work shines light in dark places, evoking hope and communal strength.
As an immigrant, Limón’s legacy reminds us of the power of cross-cultural interactions. We are indebted to Limón and other immigrants for their artistic contributions. Not only is José Limón’s work responsible for the creation, growth, and support of American Modern Dance, but it also is just as relevant today as it was seven decades ago. His work urges us to recognize our common humanity and appreciate our cultural differences.
We need your help to carry Limón’s legacy forward. If you believe in positive cultural change through dance, please consider giving to the José Limón Dance Foundation on Giving Tuesday. Together we can ensure that Limón’s work continues to inspire and unite for decades to come.
