My name is Ryan, and I'm a student at the John Volken Academy Ranch in Gilbert, Arizona. I am part of a non-profit drug and alcohol treatment program. Our long term addiction recovery program is modeled after the therapeutic community approach to addiction treatment, providing students with healthy lifestyle changes needed to live successful and sober lives.
We live and work on a 40-acre ranch in Gilbert, Arizona for a minimum of 2 years. Our responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
-Feed and care for horses, chickens, pigs and steer
-Growing and cooking farm grown produce
-Ranch construction and maintenance
-Landscape and irrigation maintenance
-Animal feed and tack sales
-Rodeo event production
These activities teach us not only pratical skills that we can use today, but valuable lessons that we can use to maintain life-long sobriety. As many graduates of the program will tell you, the combination of Arizona sunshine, dirt, animals, agriculture and hard work have a healing effect on their mind, body and soul.
The John Volken Academy exists because of the vision and generosity of John Volken. In his efforts to make addiction recovery affordable to suffering individuals in all walks of life, his foundation subsidizes the majority of the student’s expense in the program. The student is only required to pay an intake fee of approximately $5,000 and commit to remaining in the minimum 2-year program to change their life.
In order to continue offering this life-changing program to suffering addicts, we need your help! In the wake of the COVID-19 crisis, our student run businesses that keep the Ranch going have slowed considerably. Your donation will help offset the costs of ongoing facility maintenance, student living expenses, education costs and our aftercare program. We appreciate your support during this difficult time.
