I have been a Registered Nurse for the past 9 years, and for the last 3 years I have been lucky enough to be working at the Sister Caritas Cancer Center at Trinity Health New England in Springfield Massachusetts. This is more than just a job. This job has changed my life and I can attribute that to the patients that I have been lucky enough to take care of and now call my friends and family. I have never met stronger, more positive people in my life. At their most difficult time they are the most inspiring. They have made me want to be a better nurse and an even better person. Their attitude for life is contagious. Their hunger to “live everyday to its fullest” isn’t just a cliche saying that gets thrown around. Some of them are literally living their last days in our infusion room- and doing so with smiles and gratitude. I can’t begin to articulate the passion and gratitude I have to wake up every single day and live life to the fullest because of these patients. While they are dealing with the uncertainty of the future and having to overcome side effects of chemo, the last thing they should be stressing about is their finances and yet this is a struggle for the majority of patients. I’m passionate about this organization because it gives ease to these patients- it lets them focus on getting better and stronger!
I can honestly say I don’t know one person who hasn’t been affected by cancer. Cancer is the reason my grandfather left this earth early 31 years ago when I was 2 years old. Cancer robbed me of getting to know my grandfather. It robbed me of all the beautiful memories we would have made and I am running for him. I run for Ryan who at 19 years old was taken from his beautiful family. The world lost a little light the day it took his beautiful soul from this earth. I’m running for my best friend Laura who battled cancer, fought so hard and came out a survivor! Im running for my father-in-law who beat prostate cancer. Im running for my great Aunt who beat cancer a second time and for my cousin Maria who is currently crushing her treatments! For my childhood neighbor, Fred. I run for Derrick, Gary, Gail, Doug, Dennis, Janice- I’m running for Carolyn, Monica, Doug, Jenny, Laurie, JoAnn, Lois, Kevin, Melanie, Karen, Ruddy- I run for all my patients who are currently still fighting this horrific disease! I run because they will never give up and neither will I!
