I'm creating this campaign to fundraise for the Native Women's Shelter of Montreal during the challenging times of the Pandemic, as part of their 'Virtual Spirit Walk' Campaign. The work the NWSM does is life changing, essential, and inspiring. Front line services and powerful advocacy work. They need our support now more than ever. Please consider pitching in (by the end of the weekend pls!) via the link below! Every little bit counts.
"To support Indigenous families navigating the child welfare systems, the funds raised from the Virtual Spirit Walk will go towards the salary of the Family Care Worker position at the Shelter. The Shelter and the Shelter’s Family Care Workers provide critical support to Indigenous mothers and families by empowering Indigenous women to advocate for themselves, their children and their rights as mothers during youth protection meetings and court hearings. Crucially, the Shelter’s Family Care program provides healing and support in the face of the devastating, colonial practice of removing children from Indigenous families.
Indeed, Indigenous children are overrepresented at every stage of the youth protection system; the rates are higher than ever before, including during the period of residential schools.* With the Family Care workers being proactive, passionate advocates for families followed by youth protection, fewer Indigenous children are placed in foster care.
The Shelter plays an essential role in supporting Indigenous women and children that are impacted by systemic discrimination within the child welfare system. The Virtual Spirit Walk is an opportunity to directly contribute to and support the important work the Shelter is doing in order to keep Indigenous families together."
Thanks in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to me.
