Since joining two years ago, the Southern Maine Workers’ Center has been a positive part of my life. Through the Worker’s Center I’ve learned and grown and felt a deeper connection to my new home in Maine.
As a member of the fundraising committee, I’ve seen firsthand how this organization accomplishes so much with scant resources. SMWC has directly contributed to the increased minimum wage, fought for the expansion of healthcare benefits, and if all goes well, all Portland workers will soon benefit from 40 hours a year of paid sick time. In the time since I joined, SMWC also launched a weekly worker support clinic to provide legal advice and organizing support for people experiencing issues at work. The talented and dedicated folks at SMWC created a much-needed social service and opportunity for radical organizing out of thin air and volunteer labor.
I think that SMWC is doing some of the most effective organizing work in the region.
All of this important work is supported by grassroots fundraising and grants. The money we hope to raise with this campaign is just a minimum of what is necessary to keep this organization going. Please give what you can!
