We (John and Kelsie) are heading back for another week at Ultimate Peace camp in Israel this July! Tearing my ACL at camp last year was not enough to deter us from enthusiastically returning for our 5th year of volunteering. Ultimate Peace is the real deal: a regionally transformative and life-giving organization that deeply moves people to be more kind, empathetic and brave.
At Ultimate Peace, we bring over 250 youth together in Israel and teach them Ultimate Frisbee. Arabic, Jewish and others alike unite to play, have fun and build relationships. Our vision at UP is that thousands of youth in the region have a mindset shift through uplifting and unifying experiences, and that these youth live out our five values (Mutual Respect, Integrity, Fun, Non-Violence and Friendship) as young adults and adults.
As an expat couple, we have been exposed to many examples of polarization among different people groups. John and I, now more then ever, believe in the importance of bringing people from various cultures and backgrounds (who live in the same regions and countries!) together around shared values and humanity. By coaching kids at Ultimate Peace every summer we play a part in increasing compassion and respect in the world.
Our fundraising reflects our personal commitment to this cause beyond our personal time and financial donation. In 2017 I was inspired to wear my UP jersey in my first marathon, and as a symbolic tribute to funds others contribute this year will aim to proudly represent UP in such a physical challenge again. Here is our joint pledge:
- If we raise $1000, we will run a 5k together
- If we raise $2000, we will run a 10k together
- If we raise $3000, we will run a 1/2 marathon together
- If we raise $6000, we will run a marathon together
- If we raise $30000 (what the heck), we will complete an ironman together
If our community is willing to go farther to support this cause, we are willing to run further :) !
Donations must be contributed by July 20th, 2019 (last day of camp UP). We will complete the $1-3K challenges by end of 2019, the $6-20K challenges by end of 2020 (lets see where we land :) ). Milestones are cumulative (ex. if we raise $3k, we will run a 5k, 10k and 1/2 marathon).
