Jim, our dad, was so important to many of us that we wanted to come up with an event that would be a tribute to him, go towards a good cause and be fun for everyone. This will be our tenth golf outing and after the success we have had we are very excited to do the event again. Thank you for your continued support. Our dad was always there for us in the good times and the bad. He was truly a great father, mentor and friend who will have an everlasting impact on our life. We cannot thank him enough. We have found over the years that there are many other people that our dad touched as well. It was a true testament seeing the thousands of people pay tribute to the man known to many as “Jimmy” in January of 2011, and we wanted to let people know more about what caused his death. Our father had a clotting disorder, that created a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or blood clot, which traveled to his lungs causing a fatal pulmonary embolism (PE). This was not his first clot; he has had a few over the past 20 years. We always assumed that he would be fine, since he was healthy, went to doctor regularly and was on a blood thinner. Obviously, this is not always the case. The scary thing about blood clots is they can come when you least expect and can cause some serious problems, sometimes even death. DVT/PE takes 100,000 lives a year and the causes of it can be genetic. There are a few others in our family who have also been diagnosed with the same clotting disorders and may have to face some of the same issues as our dad in the future. We do not want that to happen. We ask for your support because we can make a difference in reducing this risk, missed or incorrect diagnoses and delayed treatment that can lead to chronic problems and death. The National Blood Clot Alliance (NBCA) is working hard to advance the prevention, early diagnosis and successful treatment of blood clots through its support of research, public and health care provider education and advocacy. We want to thank you again for all of your help and support. We could not do it without you! Happy golfing!
