My heart health journey started on an ordinary Monday morning in December 2020, just 7 weeks ago today. I'm not an early riser, so when I was awakened at 6:30 a.m. I knew something was up. I woke up with a feeling of pressure, a heavy feeling in my chest. Not the classic "elephant sitting on my chest" but more like our cat sitting there.
I walked around maybe 15 minutes, still there. I was burping like crazy. I alerted my husband and we decided to try some Tums. Still there. Was it a panic attack? No, I get those and this felt different. Then came a faint sensation in my jaw. Ok, enough fooling around, we are heading to the hospital. While getting dressed to go, I had a momentary cold sweat feeling come over me.
We got to the hospital and they said they would treat it as a heart attack until they found out it wasn't. Testing ramped up, treatment ramped up....not looking like a gas bubble anymore. So far, we've added nitroglycerin patches, morphine for pain and blood thinner to the mix. The heart enzyme they test for in bloodwork kept rising all day to a ridiculous number. A cardiac catheterization is scheduled for Tuesday morning.
Catheterization revealed two blockages...one at 100% and the "widow maker" blocked 85%. The doctor had problems opening the 100% blockage, but thank goodness both were opened and three stents were placed.
Thanks to modern medicine, I am doing GREAT! I've got changes ahead....better diet and more exercise. My message is this....
Ladies, don't hesitate. Get to the hospital ASAP. Doctors said I got there at the right time, minimal heart damage. It was repeated by several staff at the hospital...I WAS VERY LUCKY.
