Dear friends and family,
I have grown up in a family of responsible gun owners. As a kid, we would target practice on hay bales at our family farm. Now, I choose not to own or use one. I support our second amendment as it was written, but don't beleive our nation's founders intended it to allow civilian use of a military grade assault weapon of war or bump stocks, which turn regular rifles into assault rifles. Mental health checks for gun registry are grossly inadequate. In many states, it’s easier to buy a war weapon at a Walmart than a six pack of beer or lottery ticket.
When my beautiful 8 year old came home from school and articulated the active shooter drill she had, it broke my heart. The Sandy Hook Promise is apolitical, and simply supports common-sense gun legislation, mental health programs, and educational initiatives.
I’m running 26.2 miles on June 3rd, in the hopes that I bring awareness to this worthy cause, founded by parents who have endured an unimaginable and preventable horror. Let’s work to make our schools and nation safer. No one has more of an idea of how to fix this endemic problem better than the families, like those in Sandy Hook, who were torn apart, by this issue.
Please support me in this cause or run with me at San Diego’s Rock and Roll and Roll Marathon on June 3rd. I hope my children, Devon and Grace, and all children, will not have active shooter drills as part of their educational narrative. If you agree, please share this post, support this cause, or run with me!
Thank you,
Jessica Caris
