My name is Jessica Wilkinson. My nephew Brien was diagnosed with autism last year, at age six. Autism spectrum disorder is a condition related to brain development that impacts how a person perceives and socializes with others, causing problems in social interaction and communication After years of "un" and misdiagnosis, his family and teachers are finally able to create the best path of treatment for him. Brien is very lucky. Even though he is one of four children, his parents fight tirelessly for the most support and best services available to him. He could not have come as far as he has with out the availability of theses services, nurturing teachers and his parents advocacy. I am excited to watch him grow in the years to come.
Many families are not so lucky. Communities and facilities need more financial support to educate and offer the best treatment plans for people with Autism. Not to mention, funding for research to learn more about this disorder and its potential causes. I will be running the Long Island Half Marathon on May 6th to help raise money for Autism Speaks.
Autism Speaks Mission Statement: "dedicated to promoting solutions, across the spectrum and throughout the lifespan, for the needs of individuals with autism and their families through advocacy and support; increasing understanding and acceptance of people with autism spectrum disorder; and advancing research into causes and better interventions for autism spectrum disorder and related conditions."
Please sponsor my run and help raise money and awareness for Autism and the families it affects. **ALL PROCEEDS ARE DONATED DIRECTLY TO AUTISM SPEAKS.
Thank you so much for your support!
