My name is Jen, and this June, I will be riding to raise money for research on primary hypersomnias as part of the Hypersomnia Foundation’s Sleep/Wake Cyclers.
Primary hypersomnias (narcolepsy type 1, narcolepsy type 2, idiopathic hypersomnia, and Klein Levine syndrome) are chronic neurological sleep/wake disorders, not due to other medical conditions or medications, that cause symptoms including excessive daytime sleepiness, fatigue, headache, lightheadedness, decreased memory, decreased attention/concentration, irritability, sleep hallucinations, and sleep paralysis. These neurological conditions also put people at higher risk of cardiovascular disease, anxiety, depression, and obesity.
Few treatments exist for these disorders, health insurance does not always cover all of the treatments, and many people do not respond well to the treatments available, either experiencing inadequate symptom relief and/or intolerable side effects.
The money raised by the Sleep/Wake Cyclers for the Hypersomnia Foundation will fund global scientific research on primary hypersomnias with an emphasis on finding better treatment options in order to improve function and quality of life in persons with primary hypersomnias.
Please consider supporting primary hypersomnia treatment research by donating to my Ride for Research!
