Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency is a genetic (inherited) condition, where the body produces abnormal alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) protein. AAT is produced in the liver and protects the lungs from inflammation caused by infection or inhaled irritants. Individuals lacking AAT develop can develop life-threatening liver and lung disease. The Alpha-1 Foundation is a not-for-corporation with the mission to find a cure for Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency and improve the lives of those affected by Alpha-1. This foundation is near and dear to our hearts as Raymond's mom, Lisa, was diagnosed with Alpha-1 in 2007, and she is very active in the Alpha-1 community.
Raymond and I wanted to use our wedding as an opportunity to spread awareness for Alpha-1. A donation to the Alpha-1 Foundation would be gift enough for us, and we can't imagine a better way to start married life together than to give back to such a worthy cause.
