Dear Family & Friends:
This coming Patriot's Day, April 15th, I again will be running in the Boston Marathon to raise money for JDRF and Type 1 Diabetes research.
JDRF was established in 1970 with a simple goal: Fund the research needed to treat, prevent and cure Type 1 Diabetes, an autoimmune disease of the pancreas. It has been a marathon, but the improvements have been steady. Just this past year, your dollars and support have provided meaningful benefits for my wife Patti, our niece Katy and the millions who have T1D or who are at-risk.
Recent highlights: The FDA-approved commercial rollout has begun of the Artificial Pancreas, a closed-loop algorithm system that looks like a smart phone and automatically regulates blood levels. This is a watershed event, and we eagerly await the OmniPod version of this breakthrough! JDRF's work with companies like ViaCyte is producing 'tea-bag' like systems that carry insulin-producing beta cells and keep out beta-killing theta cells. ViaCyte is also working on islet cell implants to replace and restore beta cells. Frequency Therapeutics received a JDRF grant to determine if its Progenitor Cell Activation System can convert cells into insulin producers. Many of you contacted Congress to urge continuation of the Special Diabetes Program, worth $300mm nationally over the next two years; thank you!
Winter training for a spring marathon is always challenging; and this season went great until I was hampered by a recent injury; however combating T1D is a daily task, with no rest, no time-outs, and no days off. What I endure to prepare for this run is challenging; but it pales in comparison to the daily stress, sacrifices and complications that Patti, Katy and so many others must contend with on a daily basis. So it is in their names that I ask for your support.
If you are a previous donor, thank you for your continued support! If you are a new contributor, thanks for helping to improve the lives of Type 1 Diabetics!
Please support my fundraising by making a donation today.
