Since 2010, Janus College Preparatory & Arts Academies, Inc. (JCPAA) has provided technique-based training and instruction for youth, teens, and young adults in the Fine and Performing Arts. Located in the heart of downtown Milwaukee's Arts community students receive professional arts instruction, participate in performances, and receive support to meet their personal needs. Our mission has been to strengthen youth and young adults through exposure to the arts and provide opportunities for creative expression.
2020 has been a year that we will never forget. It is the year that has changed all of our lives, as we know it, drastically. Non profits along with other small businesses have suffered due to the COVID-19 pandemic. JCPAA is thankful and humbled to be able to keep our doors open through it all. In remaining a functional organization, we are currently working to transition programming more conducive to the new norm of staying safe in these times of a pandemic. We are restructuring both our facility and programming to better meet the needs of our students and community. JCPAA has always been a hub for education and teaching and its fitting that we provide and upgraded environment that allows for learning.
Since the inception of JCPAA, our vision for the future has been to launch Janus Liberal Arts School. A very, very small private high school that offers credit recovery programming for Milwaukee’s at-risk youth. We are targeting those youth that live in Milwaukee’s 53206 Neighborhood. Our independent school design will prepare students for a post-secondary education or career through our liberal arts curriculum. Janus Liberal Arts School replicates best practices of arts programming offered throughout the country that have been effective in educating youth, specifically, at risk youth. In several national studies conducted over the past decade, students at risk of dropping out cite participation in the arts as their reason for staying in school. Educational programming would begin Summer 2021.
JLA is designed for students that are at-risk of not graduating high school. The specific group of students we are targeting are those residing in Milwaukee’s 53206 North Division Neighborhood and the Triangle North Neighborhood 53205 due to the economic disadvantages and deficits in student achievement of those areas. Lack of student achievement has been prevalent for a long time in the North Division and Triangle North school districts. 53206 has made national media attention. This ZIP code area incarcerates the highest percentage of black men in America and has two-thirds of its children living in poverty. Janus Liberal Arts is a private choice high school that will participate in the Milwaukee Parental Choice Program (MPCP) in an attempt to provide both students and parents an alternative high school completion option and to help close the achievement gap that currently exists.
After 10 years, the physical appearance of our facility is in need of an extreme makeover to better accommodate an environment conducive for learning. Renovations and upgrades are needed for students to learn safely, especially in regards to social distancing practices. We have a Milwaukee-based, professional interior design team involved in making our vision a reality.
The renovation process will be in three phases. Phase I -Physical Environment Remodel 2020. Phase II Private School Choice Process 2020-21. Phase II Begin Programming 2021 Project Total cost of project: $15,000
I need your help! Any monetary donation would be greatly appreciated to help us absorb the costs of remodeling. If you have made a donation, in the past, please consider another monetary gift. We have contracted with a Milwaukee based interior design company to bring our vision to light!
