Jason Ewing was my dad and was unfortunately taken at a young age by cancer. In watching the research for cancer, I noticed how often people talked about Breast Cancer, but never any other type. I thought about how every fundraiser I've seen has been for Breast Cancer awareness. But what about the other cancer types, the other patients who need just as much love and support? That's what this fundraiser is for!
My dad passed after a long, almost five-year fight with Neuroendocrine cancer, a very rare type that most people have never heard of before. This is one of many types of cancers that is not noticed as much as it should be.
This is planned to be a monthly fundraiser, all of the proceeds being donated to "Stand Up To Cancer". Each month will be in recognition of a different type of cancer - each cancer getting its own month with included information about which cancer is being recognized. This month, in honor of Jason who passed in February, is Carcinoid cancer!
Carcinoid cancer is also known as Neuroendocrine cancer. The colors of this ribbon are zebra stripes. Carcinoid cancer is extremely rare - making up 0.5% of all cancers. It is uncommonly known and unlike most other cancers that start in one place, this can start anywhere in the body that there are neuroendocrine cells. About 25% of all carcinoid cancer is in the lung as a starting place. Only 2% of all lung tumors are carcinoids, however. There are several ways to be diagnosed with carcinoid cancer, however, it is commonly misdiagnosed and mistreated. There are several ways to find it including any type of CT or MRI, or in some cases, just a few blood tests that show signs with hormone levels being off. This cancer is rarely heard of, so feel free to send the word!
This fundraiser's name is in remembrance of my dad, as well as who got me interested in spreading awareness of all types of cancers that are usually not mentioned. I hope that you learned a few things about cancer and that you have considered donating. Feel free to spread the word of this fundraiser to your friends, family, anyone you want. Again, all proceeds will be given to "Stand Up To Cancer" to promote research for a cure. Thanks so much!
