"James "Jim" Foley was the brave American journalist the world tragically came to know through his brutal murder at the hands of an ISIS terrorist group on August 19th, 2014, ending 21 months of torture and captivity. His very public death shocked our nation to its core. But Jim was so much more than the story of his death. The legacy he ultimately left behind is more powerful and courageous than any act of terrorism.
One month after Jim’s murder, the James W. Foley Legacy Foundation was formed to continue Jim’s legacy: conflict journalist, educator, humanitarian. The Foundation’s mission is to advocate for the freedom of all Americans held hostage abroad and promote the safety of journalists worldwide.
Moving forward, the Foundation will also aim to educate college and graduate students to explore the value and threats to freedom of speech and the dangers of freelance conflict journalism and reporting in the midst of terrorism and violence. With the funds raised from the John Hancock Non-Profit Program, the Foundation will continue its collaborative work to vastly improve the safety of journalists who venture into conflict areas to bring us the truth and to work with our government to ensure all Americans held hostage are safely returned.
Journalist Jim Foley summoned extraordinary moral courage during his captivity and eventual brutal murder at the hands of ISIS terrorists, staying true to his commitment to freedom. In many ways, he embodied the same spirit and courage as the thousands of Bostonians and the Boston Marathon Committee when summoned as terrorism struck in 2013. And like the Boston Marathon, Jim's fearless legacy must continue." - The James W Foley Legacy Foundation
On behalf of Jim, the Foley family, and all the people living in conflict zones who Jim gave a voice to, I have decided to raise money and run my first marathon on their behalf. Jim sacrificed everything to speak for the voiceless. Please help his family and I honor his legacy with a donation!
