At 17 years old I made a decision that would forever change my life. I decided to enlist in the United States Navy. I wanted to show everyone that I was more than a cheerleader and a girly girl. I wanted to show everyone that I was tough too and could do amazing things with my life. I wanted to protect our freedoms for everyone in our country, for my future children, and grandchildren. I left for boot camp at 18 years old. I honorably served our country for 4 years and it was the best decision I could have ever made!
Helping others is in my nature. I am a wife, mother of 4, and teacher. During my time in service, I volunteered at our local food bank and met so many amazing people from all walks of life. It was then that I realized that there was still so much more I could do to help out but I didn't quite know what it was then.
Fast forward to now, 2018, and I found the Ms. Veteran America competition and the Final Salute Inc. organization. Final Salute Inc. raises money to provide safe and suitable housing for these women (and their children) who are homeless. Did you know women veterans are the fastest growing population of homeless people? Women who so bravely served our country and gave so much! There are a reported 4,338 women veterans who are homeless (reported numbers does not account for every woman veteran who is homeless - so we know there are many more).
This fact is UNACCEPTABLE! It makes me sick to my stomach. THIS is why I am standing to raise awareness and advocate for these women. It only takes $25 to help provide housing for these women (and their children) so every donation helps! Thank you so much.
