This is about Jack and Molly but first a word about us.
We're the Pine Barrens Alliance, an all-volunteer environmental group focused on preserving the unique plants, animals and amazingly bio-diverse environment that is the soul of a part of the country that you probably think you know all about - Plymouth, Cape Cod and the islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket.
You may know a lot about Plymouth Rock, about old Cape Cod with its quaint cottages and amazing beaches, about 'P-Town', Edgartown, saltwater taffy and fabulous 'lobstah rolls, but you probably don't know about the globally rare Southeastern Massachusetts Coastal Pine Barrens and the important role that young people like Jack and Molly have played in helping to preserve this unique environment.
We're a non-profit, which means that most of our volunteers don't receive any compensation for the long hours they put in: any funds we raise or grant money we receive goes directly back into the environment - with a few important exceptions: yeah, that's right, Jack and Molly.
We're a TerraCorps host organization, which means that every year - if we can raise the money - we are fortunate to the have the services of a young TerraCorps service member. That service member makes it possible for us to pursue a number of important environmental projects including: · Natural Community Identification and Mapping Training · Southern Pine Beetle Detectives · Horseshoe Crab Monitors · SEMPBAT (bat research and monitoring) · Cecropia moths for Plymouth schools · The Pine Barrens Regional Conservation Partnership · US Forest Service Landscape Scale Restoration (LSR) grant · The 'Where Do You Love' regional conservation vision map · Grant writing · Natural Burials (as a way to conserve forest lands) · Explore Natural Plymouth (ecotourism designed to support the economy while protecting natural resources) · The Moth Ball and much more (check out last year's list of our accomplishments for yourself here.)
Jack and Molly, and every TerraCorp service member, are trained to be that critical factor, that final piece of the puzzle, that key staff member that allows everyone else (who often have other jobs, families, and the like) to get the most out of the experience.
Jack was with us in the 2016-2017 term and Molly is serving the 2017-2018 term, both through the generous gift of a donor. Both are Regional Conservation Coordinators with college degrees in the environmental sciences, a love of nature, and a willingness to serve for a year to help us reach our goals. But there’s more— Jack and Molly are required to serve at least two other non-profits or community organizations during their year.
At the end of July Molly's contract with the Pine Barrens Alliance expires but TerraCorps needs to know right away if we will be able to fund another member in 2018-2019. We simply don’t have the funds this year so we are asking for your help.
Look over the pictures on this site, or at SEMPBA.org. Each one illustrates an activity or event or important environmental project that Jack and Molly made possible. Without another TerraCorps service member our headquarters will be unstaffed for many hours, even days, during the week. Without a TerraCorps service member calls will go unanswered, projects will languish, trainings won't take place.
They're that important.
We need $10,000 to be able to bring another Jack or Molly on board. We need $10,000 to be able to continue this important work.
