Meet Izzi Walker, my neice, who is suffering from Juvenile Dermatomyositis. This is a very rare condition that very few people in Northern Ireland have.
This little legend is just 7 years of age and she was diagnosed with this rare condition when she was only 4 years old. The condition limits her mobility and causes weakness in all her muscles from her neck right down to her toes. It is an auto immune disease so the risk of her catching other illnesses is very high and puts her in extreme danger. Despite this condition, Izzi tries to remain active, as she was before getting this condition, and attends judo when she is feeling well enough. Unfortunately, over the past few weeks Izzi has been in and out of hospital with low white blood cell count causing both her and her family high levels of worry.
Myself and Noel Smyth will be running 4 half marathons in 4 days (Donegal Quadrathon) in an attempt to raise awareness and money into helping combat this relatively unknown condition. If anyone has seen us out on the roads recently, you may have seen us struggle up the hill to Crescent Link so the hills in Donegal are going to be one hell of a challenge. Add in having to spend up to 10 hours with Noel in 4 days, and I am sure you will see what a sacrifice this is!
The money raised will go towards the CureJM Foundation as they bid to support the children and families of the children who suffer from this condition.
