This past February break, I had the life-changing experience in going to Batey Libertad in the Dominican Republic. “Bateys" are impoverished communities made up of Haitian/Dominican refugees. This opportunity was made possible to me through the non-profit organization Yspaniola. Yspaniola helps to provide teachers and schooling for this community. This summer, I am beyond excited to be returning as a counselor for their two week summer camp program. In order to make this possible, I need to raise $500 by June 29.
During my time spent in Batey Libertad, I heard people's stories, I learned about their culture, and most importantly, I got to make connections with many and experience the warmth and love that every one emitted from the first day I arrived. I immediately felt the sense of family and unity throughout the community. Working with Yspaniola and making the connections I made have been the reasons for my wanting to go back, these people are forever in my heart and I look forward to working with them again. Thank you all so much,
