A Message from Detroit PAL's CEO,
The children and families of Detroit have been devastated by COVID-19 and one of their lifelines for decades, the Detroit Police Athletic League (PAL), was forced to suspend our athletic leagues, volunteer mentoring and police officer programs. The virus and resulting quarantine also devastated our financial resources to safely re-engage with our youth.
In these historic times of battling racism and a deadly virus, PAL and its connection to Detroit’s families has never been more important. We ask you to join PAL’s families, staff, volunteers and community leaders in helping PAL bridge the financial gap so that we can survive and thrive when the community needs us most since our beginning 50 years ago.
The loss of PAL programs, regular interaction with mentors and other caring adults, and relationship building with Detroit Police Officers will be devastating for our community and region. It is important for our young people’s mental and physical health to have well organized and safe play opportunities. It is important for their emotional health to stay connected to their coaches, team leaders, and PAL staff. It is especially important, considering more recent events, that we continue to provide the opportunity for positive relationships between law enforcement and youth of Detroit, a city that is 80% African American.
It is imperative that PAL can provide at least 10,000 kids with recreation and mentoring opportunities in 2021. Therefore, we are assembling community and statewide leaders, like yourself, as well as PAL alumni, coaches, volunteers and officials to sign this letter of support on behalf of PAL, urging foundations, companies, and individuals to donate immediately. We need to ensure that PAL has the financial resources to provide recreation, consistency, and support to the children of Detroit. We need to retain the committed staff that are valuable leaders in our community.
We need your help. We ask that you pledge your support by donating to Detroit PAL. With continued advocacy from the community we will work together to ensure our youth have all the resources they need to find their Greatness.
