As a queer trans parent raising a child in this era, I am doing everything I can to make this a better world for my kiddo to grow up in. Part of that is combating the hate against queer and transgender families like ours, and part of that is throwing down with communities and organizing with families that may not be like ours, but that are also fighting for dignity and respect.
I'm so honored to be part of leading this historic delegation in just a few weeks! We will be joining movements from across the Americas to imagine and strategize about how to re-build Left movements in this moment, and to deepen our understanding of democracy from perspectives outside of the US.
Will you support my trip? My goal is to raise the first $500 by October 30th, and then to reach $1,000 by November 15th, 2019.
Grassroots Global Justice Alliance (GGJ) is organizing a delegation to bring the North American contingent to the Jornada Continental for Democracy and Against Neoliberalism. This meeting will bring hemispheric social movement leaders together in conversation about new political ideas and provide development opportunities to help guide us on the path to defeating the rise of authoritarianism in the US and globally. While spaces are limited to folks in leadership roles, we are committing as a delegation to report back to our full membership.
Jornada Continental Background:
The Jornada Continental is a process of strategic coordination across social movement forces in the region. In 2015, movements gathered to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the defeat of the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA). The FTAA was proposed to further advance the North American Free Trade Agreement enacted in 1994, and would have established a free trade zone across the americas. In addition to celebrating this people’s victory, the movements launched the Jornada Continental as a process of articulation in defense of democracy and against neoliberalism. Given the political context across the Americas and in particular the resurgence of the Right, the Jornada has been seen as a way to converge forces toward sharing a common struggle and vision.
After meeting in 2017 in Uruguay, this year the Jornada Continental aims to bring together close to 1,500 people from social movement forces across the globe and the continent. Over the course of three days, participants will share deep assessments of the current political moment including the landscape of right wing fascism and the assault on democracy. From this assessment participants will consider what is needed and work to develop strategies for joint struggle.
North American Delegation Goals:
1. Build relationships both within US delegation and with allies regionally and globally.
2. Deepen understanding and analysis of regional political context and the right wing surge.
3. Engage in strategy development and consideration of international joint action.
4. Exchange with and learn from international movement allies.
THE DATES: October 30-November 7
Why We Need Your Support:
For many reasons, the cost of this trip is very expensive -- approximately $2,500-$3,000 per person. We are asking each delegate to raise at least $700 to help cover the costs.
