The International Community School (ICS) is a public charter school in DeKalb County, Georgia serving students in grades K-5. ICS was strategically designed in 2002 to bring together refugee, immigrant and local children in an academically challenging and nurturing environment. Today, the school serves more than 400 students annually representing more than 30 nationalities and speaking 25 languages.
We have a beautiful garden space located on our campus that we have utilized to teach science instruction and to enjoy while growing together as a community. We want to begin engaging our refugee and immigrant parents to team up with our classes and lead us in gardening activities and expertise. We believe this connection will continue to strengthen our community and educate our students more deeply. Our hope is to create an outdoor classroom community that will bridge the gap between our parents who may not have the language practice in order to support their children. However, this garden partnership will give the parents the opportunity to participate in their children’s learning.
We need tools in order to begin our team gardening plans. The following is a list of our immediate needs: tillers, small hand tools, buckets (gallon), garden mats, shovels, rakes, hoses, soil amendments/earth worm castings, extension cords (outdoor), native and edible Seeds/plants and lumber.
