As many of you know, our family and country lost a trailblazer last week. Cokie Roberts served as a guiding light for us kids in a world so often filled with darkness. Cokie helped to teach us the importance of kindness, empathy, and so many other things. One of Cokie's great passions was supporting The Children's Inn at NIH. I have decided to run the Marine Corps Marathon in just a few short weeks as part of Team #RunINN4Kids to honor her by supporting a cause she cared so deeply for. Cokie poured her heart into her philanthropic work and I hope I can continue, in small part, her support of The Children's Inn at NIH.
The Children's Inn is a residential facility that allows families with seriously ill children participating in research at NIH to stay free of charge. Each dollar raised from Team #RunINN4Kids fuels access to the research that makes childhood possible for the more than 14,000 kids, traveling from all 50 states and 94 different countries who have stayed at The Inn. Not only does the Inn provide free lodging, but it also provides free means and educational, recreational, and therapeutic programs (such as homework help, field trips to monuments in DC, and even summer camp for kids that would never otherwise attend), all while enabling families to develop friendships and learn from others who know what it's like to see the promise of hope or a cure for a seriously ill child.
Nine years ago, I ran my first marathon (also the Marine Corps Marathon) while raising funds for another charity. Racing on behalf of a charity was incredibly powerful. However, this time I know it will be an infinitely more meaningful and impactful experience to be racing in memory of Cokie and for such an amazing cause at the same time.
I hope you will join me in supporting The Children's Inn at NIH and honoring Cokie's legacy with a donation to my Crowdrise fundraising campaign for Team #RunINN4Kids.
