India has rapidly become the epicenter of the COVID-19 crisis and the most dire oxygen crisis in the world. The country is seeing record cases of COVID-19, with more than 360,000 new cases and over 4,500 deaths being recorded daily.
MedGlobal is working on an emergency oxygen response. We are fundraising for an oxygen response, to build an oxygen generator, provide oxygen concentrators, and distribute additional medical supplies like ventilators. Along with local partners, we are working to rapidly respond to this crisis with the most critically needed medical equipment and oxygen support.
“As a Syrian American critical care specialist who has worked in disaster regions like Yemen and Syria, I believe that what is happening in India is a catastrophe that is overwhelming the healthcare system. Patients are dying unnecessarily. We have to help by all means.”
- Dr. Zaher Sahloul, MedGlobal Co-Founder and President
"Oxygen is a human right. We have the moral obligation to help COVID patients in India dying of Hypoxemia and a shortage of oxygen.”
- Dr. Conrad Fischer, Professor of Medicine, Touro College of Medicine, infectious disease specialist and Program Director of Brookdale Hospital Medical Center, President, Institute for Studies in Eastern Christianities
“There’s no oxygen. The system is broken down and we’re losing patients.”
This is from a doctor in New Delhi. Medical providers and family members of COVID patients across the countries are testifying daily about the dire lack of oxygen, which has run perilously low. Hospitals are running out of oxygen to treat patients. India is in need of 13.5 million cubic meters of oxygen per day, the greatest demand for oxygen out of all other low, lower-middle and upper-middle-income countries.
Medical oxygen is life-saving for patients struggling to breathe. The need for oxygen globally has surged during the pandemic due to respiratory distress caused by the virus. Around one in five people suffering from COVID-19 require oxygen therapy. In low and middle-income countries (LMICs), this need is hard to meet. More than half of all hospitals in LMICs lack reliable access to medical oxygen, leading to countless patient deaths. See Our Oxygen Work page to view the COVID-19 Oxygen Needs Tracker and read more about other critical oxygen crisis responses during the COVID-19 pandemic.
MedGlobal is working with local partners on a rapid medical response. MedGlobal is supporting partners to facilitate the rapid procurement and distribution of oxygen supplies, ventilators, and other critical items to support the overwhelmed health system.
